I made these cupcakes for Lilly Bug and used the Grain-Free Pupcake recipe from the previous post. The frosting is made from the traditional plain flavor of Greek Gods greek yogurt mixed with small amounts of gel food coloring. If you would like to make these cupcakes for yourself and other dog lovers you can use butter cream icing instead of greek yogurt and a real cake recipe instead of the grain-free cupcake recipe. I would recommend cutting off the very tops of the cupcakes if you're making them with a regular cake recipe for friends or family so that there is a flatter surface to decorate on.
Gather Materials
To complete this design you will need:
- At least 1 cupcake
- At least 3 icing bags
- At least 3 couplers and rings for the icing bags
-At least one #1 round Wilton decorating tip
-Gel food coloring (any colors you want. I recommend at least 4)
-Greek yogurt (plain)
-Icing spatula (or butter knife, whatever works for you)
If you aren't familiar with Wilton cake decorating materials here is the tutorial from the Wilton website explaining how to put together and fill an icing bag. Don't feel like you have to get fancy name brand materials to complete this cupcake design. JoAnn Fabrics, Hobby Lobby, and Walmart all have their own brand of cake decorating materials. Hobby Lobby also has a 40% of coupon listed daily on their website! Woo! If you google it it should pop right up. I would recommend getting a Wilton brand #1 tip because they are super small and great for details, like the eyes and mouth for this design.
Getting Started
Begin by placing 2-3 spoonfuls of plain greek yogurt into small bowls or cups and adding 1 drop of gel food coloring. Mix with an icing spatula. Pick the color you would like to use as the background for your cupcake and apply a medium layer to the cupcake using the icing spatula. Try to get the layer as smooth as possible but don't worry if it isn't perfect.
Fill in the main part of the ears with a different color and the "lip" using the same color.
P.S. Here are some other cupcakes that I made for Lilly. Don't be afraid to get creative!
