I spent several days roaming Pinterest trying to find the perfect doggy friendly birthday cake and ended up pinning several different ones, like this Spoiled Dog Cake, this Healthy Peanut Butter Carrot Cake, this absolutely adorable Dog Birthday Cake, and this also absolutely adorable cake Banana Carob Oat Cake. I ended up deciding on this Homemade Dog Cake Recipe because it seemed very doable and I knew I would be able to add my own touches here and there. This recipe does use vanilla extract, which can be harmful to dogs due to the alcohol content. It only uses 1/8 tsp and since Lilly is over 50 lbs I decided it would be okay to use the vanilla. If you're ever questioning the safety of a human food for your fur baby check out the ASPCA's website. I have found it to be very helpful. Instead of using cream cheese and Greek yogurt combined with peanut butter for the frosting I just used peanut butter. Lilly has a bit of a dairy sensitivity (cheese upsets her tummy) and I didn't want her birthday cake to make her sick. Who wants to get sick from their own birthday cake?? I also chopped up bacon flavored treats and baked them into the batter for some extra flavor.
I decided I wanted her cake to have 2 tiers. I poured the batter into 2 cake pans and was about to place them in the oven when I got a call from the pharmacy asking if I could come fill in for one the techs who was sick. I put the batter filled cake pans uncovered in the refrigerator where they stayed for several hours before I could come home and bake them. I don't think refrigerating the batter hurt anything, but I have no idea how the cakes would have turned out if the batter hadn't been refrigerator for that time.
Lilly went nuts for this cake! She would have eaten the entire thing in one sitting if we had let her. It didn't seem to upset her tummy but the food coloring did make her poop green for a few days (eeeww). Other than that we didn't have any tummy problems. Yay!
Thank you SO much to everyone who sent Lilly birthday wishes! We have the best followers ever! You all are awesome! We love you!
Love,
Lilly Bug
