I was browsing Pinterest (like I do every day) and came across a pin for "38 Unexpectedly Brilliant Tips for Dog Owners". One of the tips was to freeze fresh apple slices and low sodium chicken broth in ice cubes tray and give it to your dog as a "cool down treat" when they are outside or have just come back in from being outside. The link that takes you to the full 38 tips is here: http://www.buzzfeed.com/peggy/brilliant-hacks-for-dog-owners#.yjEDGvLyV
I didn't freeze the treats in an ice cube tray because we don't have one. Instead I used a mini muffin baking tin and they came out the perfect size. The recipe directions in the link say to let them freeze for 4 hours before serving to make sure that they are completely frozen. I put them in the freezer before taking Lilly to potty and when we came back inside (about 30 minutes later) they were totally frozen already. I gave one to her and she LOVED it. I won't give these to her all day long but I do think having a couple a day is better than giving her plain ice cubes all the time.
Make sure to avoid the core of the apple. Apple seeds are poisonous to humans and fur babies.
