Mickey and Fluffy are two senior rescue dogs that prove senior dogs rock! Their mom, Kimberly, is dedicated to promoting senior adoption and showing the world that disabilities and age don't change the love these awesome dogs have to offer or the blessings they bring.
"Mickey is a 13 yr old great dane/lab mix from Texas. Sadly he found his way to the Mesquite animal shelter where my family adopted him from. Thankfully some nice people shared his photo on Facebook where he ended up on my newsfeed, and when I saw him I knew we had to go adopt him. Even though we already had 6 dogs we knew we couldn't just leave him there. Mickey was described as a sweet old man who loved people but had some disabilities, he was deaf & practically blind. My husband & I adopted him December 21,2015. Despite his disabilities, he deserved a loving home to live out his golden years, so that year he was our families christmas gift. That same day we took Mickey to the vet to get an overall health check up. That's when we found out Mickey was very underweight, had low liver/kidney values, severe arthritis in the hip and back which kept him from walking and sitting properly and to top it all off he is heartworm positive. Two months later with the proper care, nutrition, & medicine he was back to a proper healthy weight & was able to walk and run at times without a lot of pain. The vet rechecked his bloodwork to find that he was completely back to normal, of course he's not a puppy, but for an old man his bloodwork looked great. So far we are in the clear of liver/kidney failure. We also found out that Mickey doesn't have advanced heart worms so he will be with us for many more years. Even with all these scares & disabilities Mickey has, we wouldn't trade him for the world. He's been such a blessing. Senior pets are so amazing!"
"Mickey now has a senior brother named Fluffy who is a 10 yr old Pomeranian who was rescued from an abandoned parking lot. Everyday at 6am we would go the the parking lot to feed and water him trying to gain his trust. Fluffy was very shy & leery of us which I couldn't blame him. We didn't know what he went through on a daily basis being alone. After a month of trying to get him, finally one day he allowed my husband to pick him up and bring him to our home. The first 2 weeks he did great 'till one day he felt sick & could no longer move. We rushed him to the vet where we were told he got sick from living on the streets for so long. He was so skinny & had no muscle mass so his legs could no longer hold him up to sit, walk or even use the bathroom. He was referred to a specialist where X-rays & ultrasounds were done but no diagnoses was concluded. They were completely stumped. They prescribed meds to at least see if it will help him with pain tolerance. My family fed him around the clock & gave him yucky meds everyday. Finally after a few weeks had gone by he was able to gain some weight and had his pain under control. A few more weeks went by and a miracle happened. He was able to walk, run, and play with no pain. He is a brand new dog, looking at him you would've never thought he went through this troubled time in his life where we thought he would never walk again."
Here is what Kimberly has to say about Mickey and Fluffy and the adoptable senior dogs like them:
"My family is honored to have these two big blessings in our life, I would have never imagined loving these old boys like we do. They are absolutely the best dogs we could ask for, because of that reason my mom created this IG account to promote senior adoption. Too many pets get passed up because of their age or disabilities but we are here to tell you those disabilities make no difference to these babies. They don't act any different than a regular pet."
