Can you substitute the maple syrup in the glaze for honey? Absolutely! Feel free to get creative and adapt this recipe to fit your own style. Can you make this recipe in a dehydrator? Probably. We don't have a dehydrator and I have never used one before but if you know what you're doing with one I'm sure it is possible to figure out a way to make it work.
Remember! Never use peanut butter or other foods with Xylitol in them. It is toxic to fur babies even in small amounts!
I'm going to type the recipe up here within the blog text but I will also have a document that you can download and print off at the end of the post in case you don't feel like taking your laptop or phone into the kitchen with you.
Homemade Peanut Butter Maple Chicken Jerky
- At least 1 chicken breast
- Creamy Peanut Butter (1 Tablespoon)
- Maple Syrup (1 Tablespoon)
- Water (3 Tablespoons)
Materials:
-Oven
-Microwave (optional)
-Paper Towels
-Sharp Knife
-Small, Microwave Safe Bowl
-Measuring Spoons
-A Medium/Large Cookie Sheet
-Non-Stick Cooking Spray
-Microwave Safe Plate
Directions:
1) Preheat oven to 250*F
2) Defrost chicken in the microwave and cut into slices that are 1/8 to 1/4 inches thick.
3) Pat the chicken slices dry with paper towels before laying them evenly spaced on the greased cookie sheet.
4) Once the chicken is on the cookie sheet you can begin making the glaze.
5) Spoon a small amount of amount of glaze on each chicken slice and spread evenly.
6) Bake for one hour.
7)After one hour flip the jerky over (it should be pretty hard at this point) and glaze the other side of the chicken.
8)Bake for one hour. If chicken is not fully dehydrated after the second hour bake for an additional 30 minutes.
Store in a sealed container in the fridge for 1 week or in a sealed container in the freezer for 2 weeks.
Making the Glaze:
Mix the tablespoon of peanut butter, tablespoon of maple syrup, and three tablespoons of water in a microwave safe bowl. *Microwave for 30 seconds. Stir and allow to cool. As it cools it will thicken and should end up a consistency similar to applesauce.
*If you do not have a microwave you can still make the glaze by using 3 tablespoons of very hot water. The main reason for microwaving is to soften the peanut butter.
I hope your fur babies enjoy the recipe! I tried some and it tasted a lot like bacon. I might just have to make a batch of jerky for myself!
