You might be wondering why Lilly gets so many treats. We live in a 2nd floor apartment and we have to take Lilly downstairs and across the street to the designated doggy potty area so she can go to the bathroom. It's quite the trip. We wanted her to understand that making the trip so she can potty is good thing and that peeing/pooping in the apartment is not. We use a clicker in conjunction with treats for potty training. As soon as she squats to do her business the clicker is clicked and a treat is offered. It has worked really well so far. She occasionally pees in the apartment (never poops) but that really doesn't happen very often and she lets us know that she did it. She also gets a treat for coming up the stairs on her own without us having to carry her up.
She can sit on command and lay down on command and is rewarded with a click from the clicker and a treat as long as she does it when we ask her to. She likes to be dramatic and throw herself down on the ground in front of where we keep the treats hoping she will get one for doing a trick on her own. She also gets one for going in her kennel when we have to leave for class/work.
So we go through a lot of treats with her. I came across a pin that included a 2 ingredient dog treat recipe and I have made about 4 batches since I first found it. http://www.bakeatmidnite.com/2014/03/2-ingredient-dog-biscuits.html
Baby food and flour. Can it get any easier? I didn't follow the recipe exactly. The recipe in the link calls for two 4 oz jars of baby food and 2 cups of flour. I used one 4 oz jar of baby food and 1 cup of flour. I didn't realize that I had grabbed a couple 2.5 oz jars of baby food until after I got home from the store but I still used them anyway with 1 cup of flour. I don't recommend the 2.5 oz/1 cup recipe. The treats were a lot thicker and they didn't bake as well as the 4 oz/1 cup treats did. Make sure the baby food you buy DOES NOT have ONION POWDER in it. The link goes into more detail on why it is bad for you beloved little dog. Chris and I both tried them and they really are pretty good. They have a similar feel to them as teething biscuits for human babies. The treats puff up while they are baking and most of them stay that way. If you have ever made your own tortillas or seen them being made by hand it looks a lot like that.
Tip: Use extra flour on the surface you roll the dough out on. It is very sticky dough.
